RealServer
RealServer refers to a client-server based system which
allows web sites to deliver compressed pre-recorded and live audio or
video data ("streaming") to multimedia computers with a Real Player
(download a copy of the
Real Player).
The Player continuously decompresses the audio/video streams and then
plays them in real time, on demand. Unique flow control technology allows
computer users with sound cards to listen to whole clips, or just sections,
when they want, as often as they want.
One of the most significant features of our Virtual Server System is its autonomous operation in a "virtual" environment on a shared machine. Our Virtual Server emulates the behavior of a dedicated server. In fact, each of our Virtual Servers uses its own independent configuration files and MIME types file. This allows you to install and run server software on your Virtual Server as if you had a dedicated machine... something that is simply not possible if you were using a virtually hosted system. A prime example of the superiority of our Virtual System over a Virtually Hosted system is its capability of running RealNetwork's (formerly Progressive Networks) RealServer™ software. Now that RealNetworks offers a free license (see RealNetwork's Note on Commercial Use) for their Basic RealServer product (formerly known as the EasyStart Server), there is little reason for streaming RealAudio and RealVideo files via HTTP. The Basic RealServer has many new features that improve the overall delivery and enhance the quality of on-demand streaming. Please review the document "HTTP versus RealAudio Client-Server Streaming" available on the RealNetworks web site. Currently, we are not charging our customers for the RealServer support; however, this is dependent on the vendor and is subject to change.
